Social Media Buttons/In-Game Website Plugin Tutorial (RMMV)

This tutorial demonstrates how to use my Social Media Buttons/In-Game Website plugin for RPG Maker MV.

With the plugin you can place social media buttons (Twitter, Facebook and website) on the Title Screen. You can also call a website from within the game. These will open in a new game window or new tab in your default browser.

"Fortune's Tavern" - The Fantasy Tavern Simulator

Fortune's Tavern is a real-time fantasy tavern-simulator, where you assume the role of Mathias Gambridge, owner of this notorious tavern. Your job is to rebuild and renovate the ailing tavern amid a turbulent world at war.

Making a profit is made difficult with infestations, hauntings and zombies, and guests bent on killing one another. There is a plethora of unique features to boost your income and make life reasonably pleasant for your guests.

There is a Kickstarter fund set up for this interesting game, so please consider contributing towards its development and you'll receive some unique items when the game is released. Come pay day I will be making a payment towards it.

I also have the opportunity and pleasure to be one of the winners of their recent competition, earning me the right to be immortalized as a unique NPC in the game.

The Paranormality Trilogy

The Paranormality trilogy is a series of games for RPG Maker, loosely based on a set of unpublished short stories and novellas I wrote, actually inspired by some of my own experiences.

The entire trilogy focuses around paranormal investigator Jack Urban. Alyssa, his sister, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, so his mission has become to find out exactly what happened to her. His quest for the truth will take him to the Other Side and back, pitting him against some of the most nefarious daemons in the Seven Realms.

Portals revolves around the events leading up to her disappearance and is the prequel to Darkling for RMVX and Nexus for RMVXA (planned as future projects).

"To The Moon" by Freebird Games - Highly Recommended Game

Freebird Games' To the Moon is an award-winning indie adventure RPG about two doctors who travel through a dying man's memories to fulfill his last wish: To go to the moon.

I've just finished playing it and it's one of the best RPG Maker indie games I've played in quite some time. I would highly recommend it to those seeking an evocative, very touching and enjoyable love-story game that is quite different from the "norm".

To The Moon is evocative, intriguing and compelling. It's heart-warming in places, tearful in others, but with just the right amount of humour injected in it to balance it out. The plot kind of unravels bit by bit to keep you going until the end, just to find out the reasons behind the request and what ultimately happens at the end.

The music is awesome, especially the piano theme music, and the customised graphics add an extra dimension to the game! It also has the game Whack-A-Mole, which I used to be good at (my record is 95%!).

This is why To The Moon has been pre-selected for my upcoming Wulf's Choice Award.

You can buy To The Moon on Steam or visit Freebird Games' Products Store for additional add-on products.

RPG Maker VX Ace Tutorials - Overhead Mapping (+playlist)

This is a remarkable tutorial on Overhead Mapping by TheUnproPro. He has a LOT of tutorials on RPG Maker VX Ace, conveniently split into "Season Episodes". It's well worth watching if you're starting out or even if you're an expert for the ideas alone.

You can visit his RPG Maker VX Ace Tutorials Youtube channel here.

Paranormality: Darkling Official Projects Site

Since I've now bought a copy of RPG Maker VX Ace, I've been focusing on familiarising myself with its features, functions and script.

The projects site for Paranormality: Darkling is now online and will be updated as and when updates to the project are finished.

Here is the final opening (animated) title screen:

I've been writing most of the scripts myself, porting over some of the RMVX scripts I've done, particularly the Extra Stats script, which is being updated for both and will be updated after my interview.

Paranormality RMVX / Q-Engine Features

Paranormality RMVX Project

I've started working on a new RMVX project, entitled Paranormality: Darkling, which are loosely based on my Jack Urban Chronicles novels (in progress) and will showcase what the Q-Engine is capable of. The project has just entered its embryonic stages, but regular updates will appear on its official website.

Q-Engine Features List

Now that the Q-Engine is at version 1.17.26.3 (cited as Release Candidate 2.0), it's time to showcase some of its major features. All of these are customisable from the Configurations Settings.

  • Animated Title Screen - Animated title and author/subtitle graphics, as well as moving layers.
  • Menu Information Windows - Provides additional information about each menu command (main menus).
  • Game Over Menu - A menu on the Game Over screen to provide options to restart, continue or terminate.
  • Actor Ranks/Titles - A feature where a title is given depending on the actors' levels.
  • Alternative Layout - An alternative Status Screen layout, replete with titles. This feature has recently undergone a rewrite for improvements and compatibility issues.
  • Extra Character Info - A feature to provide extra bio information on the Status Screen, such as gender and age.
  • Pretitles/Last Names - Gives options to include a pretitle and last name (surname).
  • Actor Options - Displays additional bonuses derived from objects and actor options (set in the Database.)
  • Battle Start/End Images - Displays an announcer image at the beginning and end of battles.
  • Critical Flash - The screen flashes a certain colour when a critical hit has been struck (actors and monsters).
  • Turn Counter - A window is displayed during battle counting the number of combat rounds.
  • Extra Stats Window - Shows a window displaying additional stats, such as the number of combats won/lost, the amount of gold collected, etc. This can also be summoned from the map by pressing a (predefined) key.

Video Demo - Q-Engine for RMVX

A video demo of the Q-Engine has finally been uploaded.

The Q-Engine is an enhancement engine for RMVX comprising a number of scripts/scriptlets and tweaks, all of which are customisable. Note: The version numbers in this video differ to the actual version numbers. Script release date is 15 December, 2012.

Is Magic Really Real? Cartoon

This is something I did a while ago just for fun. While it's not directly related to RPG Maker, it still has fantasy elements to it, so I thought I'd post it. If it takes too long to load or doesn't load at all (most likely it won't), you can view it here.

You can create your own at GoAnimate.com. It's free and fun!

Animated Title Screen Redux RMVX

The Animated Title Screen Redux RMVX 1.6 is an experiment with sprites and layers.

Although it started out as an experiment purely with sprites (showcased in a previous video), it developed into a simple title animation and then into something more complex, with the addition of a message or credits on the Title Screen. It may or may not be integrated into the Q-Engine in the future.

The title itself, "The Chronicles of Yrth", is taken from a novella I wrote in the early '90s, which was completed but never published. This will be a future project, based loosely on that novella.

The background music is Living Voyage by Kevin MacLeod.

Melodia (Rpg Maker VX ACE)

Here's another awesome script from Moghunter. The Melodia script for RMVXA is a "rhythm game" in a similar vein to Guitar Heroes, where you press keys with the notes as they travel down the "note highway".

I've played Guitar Hero and many of its clones, and thoroughly enjoy it, but that's not to say I'm any good. My hand-to-eye coordination is rubbish! That said this is an excellent addition to your RMVXA script collection and will give your game an extra dimension.

How To Convert an RMVX Game To RMVXA

Here's another essential utility for all RMVX/RMVXA users. I've not had an opportunity to try it out, but judging from the video it is very useful for those who have made the transition from RMVX to RMVXA.

You can download the utility directly here.

Caveat: It's important to note (as mentioned in the video) that it's highly unlikely that this utility will convert scripts, since RGSS2 and RGSS3 are vastly different. You'll have to convert the scripts on your own or find alternative scripts.

Custom Menu System [Radial] for RM2K3

This tutorial demonstrates how to create your own Custom Menu System (CMS) and "radial" menu for RM2K3. This is the first RM2K3 entry I've done in quite some time, but someone I know requested it so this is for you, my friend.

This is the Part 1. The second part can be found here.

Note: This should also work with RM2K with some tweaking.

Simple Animated Title (RMVXA)

This simple script manipulates the title (defined in the Database) and animates it, from the top of the screen to the centre of the screen above the menu. It was written specifically for the Paranormality 1: Darkling before the Trial ran out.

Note: This version does not have the mouse system or the "Continue" feature implemented.

Cutscene Tutorial - RMVX

This is a very commonly asked question, so here is a good tutorial from GeniusInMotion. It's around 30-minutes long, but it's worth watching to give an idea of how to create a cutscene.

The same principles also apply to RMXP and RMVXA, although if you're competent at making movies from scratch RMVXA will allow you to call the movie instead.

Free RPG Maker Project Music

Want some free BGM music for your projects? Here are some decent, upbeat, techno-styled songs. DanoSongs provides royalty free music, including one of my favourites, Today Then Tomorrow.

All music can be downloaded from the site and freely used in any project, including RPG Maker ones, as they are available under the Creative Commons license. This means use them but give credit to DanoSongs in return.

Giant Resources Archive for RMXP

I haven't updated anything for RMXP for a while, so here's something awesome! It's quaintly titled "Pandora's Box" and it certainly is full of surprises! There are a LOT of resources here; I'm tempted to reinstall RMXP just to try them all out.

All of the downloads can be found here, below the video.

June 2012 Poll - The Gladiator Project Animated Title Screen Votes

The poll for the "official" Title Screen for The Gladiator Project is now open. Vote for your favorite Animated Title Screen. This will run for a month and the video with the highest result will be the official title screen in The Gladiator Project.

Cast your votes here or by using the widget on the right-hand side. Or in the comments box below.

Animated Title (RMVX) - The Chronicles of Yrd

This started out as an experiment with sprites, but developed into a simple title animation. The title itself, "The Chronicles of Yrth", is taken from a novella I wrote in the early '90s but which was never published. This will be a future project, based loosely on that novella.

The script may or may not eventually be shared on RPG Maker Times Companion. It depends what happens between now and then, and if the project actually goes ahead as a planned collaboration.

Music Box (RMVXA)

This fantabulous script from the one-and-only Moghunter (who brought you various Animated Titles, among many other things). It's a Music Box, which is a feature I've wanted in my games since RM2K3, where every time you hear new music it's playable in the music player.
